The Horse Ride, north side of The Mall

The white building on the right is No.1 Carlton Gardens, the official residence of the Foreign Secretary. On the left are the grounds of Marlborough House behind the wall. In between is a locked gate that opens onto a footpath which up to 1906 led to a rear entrance of The War Office in Pall Mall. In 1906 the War Office was demolished and the site was used for the RAC Club which still stands on that site. I do not know whether the gate has always been there or not, but I suspect that it has and only senior Army Officers would have had a key. The Headquarters of the Army is at Horse Guards and it would be more convenient to use this entrance to the War Office after a short walk across St. James's Park, than to walk into Waterloo Place and along Pall Mall, well that's my theory
