• how tall do you think this is? - {D}
  • It was difficult to find, but the best description of the Petoskey Pierhead is:

    A 33 ft (10 m) round "D9" cylindrical steel tower, painted white, on a red square concrete base.
  • I don't know if the base is included in the 33 feet, but from lake level to the top of the pierhead, i'd estimate to be at least 50 feet; so, i'd estimate the wave is at least 70 feet! Wow!!
  • Hmm, from where I sit thats maybe 2 inches.. - Odalaigh
  • Focal plane from water level is 44 feet. Those are some big waves in the bay!!!! - Brian.H

  • Ow..my god...Incredible..

Huge Wave Crashes on the Petoskey Breakwater

Newer Older

we're locked down in some serious weather today in petoskey. still, i took a walk down to the petoskey waterfront to get some "storm story" pics. at times, due to the blowing snow, it was hard to even see the petoskey D9 beacon, at other times (like in this pic), it cleared up nicely.
update - just in case you're curious, yes, i realize how many times i used the word "petoskey" in this description. i'm in a fierce duel with Odalaigh for supremacy in petoskey picture relevancy.

    Great shot. Petoskey, not to be confused with Petoski the horse who won me a wad of cash in the early 80's

    I've just curated

    I was born and raised there (Petoskey). I've never seen anyone capture the sheer power and raw beauty of the Bay in winter like you have in this particular photo. I live near Monterey, CA now and it's beautiful, but somehow the ocean just doesn't compare...Lake Michigan is alive. Thanks for that awesome shot.
