This is one of my favorite photos ever. This was from back in December of 2007. It was the first time that I had seen this species. The Common Redpoll is a beautiful little finch that spends most of its time in northern Canada. But, it will drift across the border into the far northern US if its food supply is covered with snow.
I had heard of a flock of them just north of Chesaw, Okanogan Co., WA and headed up there as soon as I could. I found them in an Alder tree and noticed that once in a while they would fly to this little wild rose bush. So, I set up my camera and tripod there just waiting for one to fly back. I was extremely lucky to have this handsome fellow pose perfectly for me. I love the way the color of the rose bush complements the cranberry red on the bird.
