Custom built microphone gets a high quality Vintage American made NIB / NOS Tube.
My quest to find the sweetest sounding tube was narrowed down to two NIB NOS 12AX7WA's. One being a USAF SYLVANIA tube and the other being a high quality JAN G.E. tube.
Each tube was manufactured in the 1960's, in which one could clearly see the quality and most apparently the perfection within both tubes.
The Mic was assembled from many different components, The inner frame is one kit, the body sleeve and bottom base is from another company and the Gold microphone head capsule basket was purchased from another manufacturer. The mic capsule itself is an original AKG CK-12 capsule; and is very healthy for it's age.
The circuit is based on the AKG C-12 microphone that was component modified to accommodate 12AX7 type tubes. Also a custom wound transformer was used to handle the modified circuit.
After all the testing listening, testing and listening, I wound up selecting the JAN GE 12AX7WA, which for me had the richer sound of the two. I could have easily selected the USAF SYLVANIA on any other given day. I also have a nice collection of NOS European equivalents, but for this mic I wanted to use an American made new old stock tube.
