Defensive Position

I had flown from Melbourne with a three hour stop in Bangkok to Frankfurt. Arriving in Frankfurt at 7:30 AM. I drove for about three and half hours to reach Rothenburg ob der Tauber. This was my first ever photo in Europe and the first using my shiny new Canon T70 camera.

GER, Rottenburg, 11 Dec 1987

I chose Rothenburg because of the recommendation it received in the Michellan Guide to Europe. It completely lived up to the promise, a great medival castle.

Back, not long after I visited, and again just this year, a friend of a friend in the western suburbs of Melbourne, Australia, mentioned that in WWII a SS unit was in the town. The Americans had the place surrounded, but because of it's historical significance, they did not attack. They waited for permission to attack from their superiors. They told the German unit to surrender. Which apparently they did.
