What we saw of the destruction of Weybridge and Shepperton
Early in the 20th century, the Thames-side towns of Weybridge and Shepperton were destroyed by invading Martian war machines, as described in HG Wells' 'War of the Worlds' and associated documents.
Some 80 years later, Shepperton experienced a more surrealistic apocalypse, as related in JG Ballard's 'The Unlimited Dream Company'.
More recently, the same author's 'Kingdom Come' detailed the consumerist/fascist uprising in the thinly fictionalised town of 'Brooklands' (Weybridge being home to the former Brooklands motor racing circuit).
In July 2008, a volunteer group of researchers, writers and drinkers convened in the heart of this zone, in an attempt to better understand the nature of these catastrophes.
These photographs may be considered to be primary evidence.
