365 13 Marbles

Moleskine fold out on Childhood memories contd., medium, Neocolour wax crayons.

As a child I had a collection of marbles. Boys would play games using the spaces between the granite sets on our back street. I never mastered the game and didn't really want too as I was much more interested in the marbles themselves which came in many patterns and sizes.

In my collection were plain clouded glass marbles which looked sand blasted. They were sometimes irreglar in shape and were inexpensive.

When I worked for the Govt. printer much later I found they were used for preparing lithographic zinc plates for printing. The marbles were placed in a large tray with the plate beneath; the tray was then mechanically agitated and the marbles would rub the old image from the plate to prepare the surface for re-use. Really they were working marbles.
