Octan Ultimate RC Drift Kombi

Newer Older

A iconic VW model of yesteryear, the Kombi ranks only after the VW Beetle and the most memorable and distinctive vehilce from the makers of the German 'People's Car.

I have been hankering to build a miniland Kombi ever since the first grainy spy images of the official Lego set emerged. I should have gotten off to a quicker start though, with no less than three VW vans in Flickr LUGNuts 4th anniversary challenge. Most of the VW vans have been dedicated to the challenge theme - 'Autos Aus Deutschland' - true here too, but I have choosen the theme - 'Octan Racing' for this model.

Yes, Ralph has a green and white Kombie also, so I knew it would take something a little extra to get credit. This is found under the model in the form of the Lego RC rollerskate. This component fits this model scale perfectly, and so here I present the Octan Racing Ultimate RC Drift Kombi Van.

The model is styled to the theme of the original Type 2 Van, though I may need to work on the roof pillar spacing. You may also not the over-large windows and skylight, though these features are to assist in maintaining line-of-sight from the RC sender unit.

My speed-crazy children now have a new favourite lego car, one which can drive itself into the kitchen cupboard, and off the kitchen table.

Thanks Geoff, for driving into (and spilling my coffee) at work.

Thanks everyone for your encouraging words.

I think the VW Kombi is a really emotionally engaging vehicle and there is a lot of opportunity for individual customisation. I hope to make some more variants soon.

I will get around to taking a driving video too.

I'm sure I'm not the first to say this but I think I really want this! Lets see what its got going for it?

    1) it's VW
    2) it's R/C
    3) it's Lego.

I think its a win, win, win!
