Mercedes-Benz W124 230 E Saloon
Considered a luxury car in most markets, the W124 230E in its home market was seen as more of a utilitarian product. It was often used a a taxicab, or rental car.
The rental car experience was my first interaction with the W124 230E, as two versions of the car sat in the driveway as part of my educational trip to West Germany in 1986.
The car was exceptionally quiet, roomy for a family (though a bit squeezy four-across in the back seat for teenagers.
The car was fast too, sitting happily at 210 km/h on the autobahn.
Experience of the car suggested that a car need not be any bigger, or any more powerful, but those aren't the drivers in the luxury market, which is why the market is now full of 200 kW, 2,000 kg luxury SUVs.
But if you had a 230E, you'd have all your real needs met.
