My scanlation of the Xenogears Perfect Works. It took around 4 months of work here and there and at last it's done! I was inspired to teach myself to read japanese mostly because of this book. Then, of course there is a huge amount of anime out there they haven't brought here . . .

Some things sound very awkward, but I went in favor of a literal translation to keep the information intact, so bear with it, it's all here to within 95% accuracy, it just sounds funny.

The most difficult part was translating words the creators invented for science that doesn't exist. I had to wing it, and hopefully the gist of it comes across. This is a fan work, and for the fans who finally can read the book. 10 years ago, the game came out, and people have been awed ever since then by the depth of the story. Many are still talking about the finer points of the plot today, and most wish for a redo for the game itself. As the Perfect Works makes clear, the game was incomplete, even the creators admit as much in the book. And a sequel is very needed to do the overarching story justice. But it's been 10 years, and the likelihood of that is remote.

The game was perhaps not the right venue for a story of this magnitude and it's plainly obvious from this book that they were still hashing out facts right up to the game's publication.
An unfinished masterpiece.

Man, this is seriously impressive stuff. What's even more amazing is the relatively short amount of time it took you to do it, as well! Seriously, congratulations on getting this completed, amazing!

Will you be translating any more of the Perfect Works series? I, for one, would love to see what information is in the (sadly overlooked) SaGa Frontier II PW, as it looks to have loads of background info for the game itself.

I vastly prefer Xenosaga to Xenogears, but this is simply amazing. Congratulations and thank you.

Here's hoping for a PDF version that corrects the typos and the awkward phrasing found intermittently in the text.

Simply amazing to have this finally done, even if what msz_006d7 says is true, might he offer the proper material help in return, or else I don't think I'll mind XD

That was fast and you beat a certain group that I won't mention here since for what they did they did well. Thanks a lot for this complete work on what I call my "bible" (^ω^)

I have considered Saga Frontier II Perfect Works, but I would have to essentially destroy my own book in the process of scanning it. The process breaks books and it is very hard to track down Saga II Perfect Works at a reasonable price.

So, I may do that if I hear from more people, because it is very in depth and fascinating and if I can find a scanned one online like the Xenogears.

The mistakes and typos I'm fully aware of, which is why I might fine tune what's here first, before starting another thing. The whole is for download on various torrents by someone named Systom. He did the work of getting it all together. It is an awkward translation, because I'm an English speaker and self taught. The portions that are awkward are the parts they invented in Japanese, like words for black holes, etc that are hell to translate. One of the toughest areas was the part about the Ethos or Church politics. Damn that was hard. And kind of boring. But I know that needs to be revised.

And all the teeny tiny print, the 'tsih' and 'teh' mistakes are in there, my eyes just didn't catch them all. But it's translated and I don't know if anyone else will get around to it. At least the information is all there. And for what it's worth, I enjoyed doing this.

Great job UltimateGraphics! Your hard work and devotion as a fan of XG surely helps to inspire us all to do the same as you!

On another matter, I would also be interested in an scanlation (or simply just a simple translation in txt format lol) of Saga Frontier II Perfect Works. This game's story & universe is one of them that inspires me greatly, even thought there seems to be unexplained mysteries or just some things left unanswered. In some case, like in this game, there is enough elements to help imagination to go into motion for recreating a good portion of this game's universe, but on the other hand, we would also want to know the precise idea of the developper (Kawazu I think?) on his story.

My sincere thanks!

I like Saga Frontier II Perfect Works also, and it has a great deal of depth, but unlike the Xenogears PW which was very readily available for download, there are no scans anywhere of Saga II PW. I really don't want to destroy my own copy, because the cost of replacing it is $100-$200 depending on Ebay at the time. So, unless I can find one already scanned, I don't think I could do the same level of translation as that for Xenogears. Thanks for the input, though.

Well just translating it without scanning it would be enough, really. The most important thing is the info found in it.

But do you think we could it at yahoo auction in japanese?
page6.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/f78379227 rel="nofollow
and
page6.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/f70372204

I just found that and I know for sure that 4000 yen values around 40 canadian dollars...Of course there is the transportation fees to pay, but it is much more lower then the other PW we can find on ebay (around 180-200). Since I don't know japanese but you do, you could buy it and I would pay you afterwards.

Thanks for the generous offer. I have another idea, one that would give people the graphic looks of it, without wrecking the book. I would take a hi res digital image of each page with my camera, and even if it's a little muddy, I would be able to do the translation right on it.

I still want to hear more input, I can't see devoting the effort to it unless there's more than just a couple people interested. Thanks, though.

Oh, wow, don't go destroying your copy of SF II:PW. That'd be a bit too much! It's a pity that more people aren't interested in SF II though; I doubt you'll get many people requesting a translation of it. Shame really, I reckon it's a vastly underrated game(as the series is in a whole) and the little details I've gathered from talking to others are enough to turn the whole plot of the game on its head.

Glad you enjoyed it! I was inspired to learn to read japanese originally when I got this book 9 years ago, and then I saw how much anime in general is out there. There is a ton of material that has never seen release here, even with Tokyopop cranking out a gazillion manga each year. Like science fiction, anime has many good franchises, and many frankly, suck. It's really a matter of taste.

I did all the Xenogears work on the maps and script around 5 years ago, and decided to tackle the translation 6 months ago, finishing in March. I worked on it when I had time, and between computers dying on me, etc. it took around 5 months to complete. It was quite an adventure!

Dude, awesome work! As a budding translator myself (or perhaps just a lazy piece of crap taking it a kanji at time :B) I am EXTREMELY impressed by this! I'm nowhere near this level now, but by gum, if this didn't inspire me further, I don't know what it did! Aside from shock and amaze!

Anyway, consider another vote for SaGa Frontier 2 cast, if it's not too much trouble!

UltimateGraphics says:

Thanks for the feedback. I do have around 10 or so people interested now, so it's looking more promising. Instead of scanning the book, I will take hi res shots with my camera of each page and work on that.

Right now, I am taking a needed break from graphics, translating, etc. because if I take on another project of that magnitude, I don't want to burn out.

For Kanji students, I highly recommend 'Kanji ABC' (ISBN 0804819572) because it trains you to see the pictures in the characters. It's like memorizing a friend's face. Once you see the pattern, you know it forever. It is one of the best books on this I have found, and instead of memorizing what seems to be an overwhelming amount of abstract characters, you learn to see their 'personality' very fast. Hope that helps Ashercroix. :)

Just adding in your voice to others gives me an idea of how many might be interested in this. The reward is in the process of doing one of these projects (for me) and you people don't need to do anything. If I decide to do this, it will ultimately be because I really want to translate it. If you happen to know where it all may have been scanned, like the Xenogears Perfect Works, that would be very helpful.

It is very in depth, and the game was not really that well organized, so you will probably be surprised at just how much historical information is packed in. Why they designed all that detail and it didn't get put into the game really has me at a loss. Probably some corporate guy's idea of keeping expenses down.

Quick questions on that: does it say if fake Gustave is Gustave's body? Did Gustave definitely die at Han Nova? What was the deal with Gustave's anima? What does it say at the end of Ginny Knight's time line; something about Wil? Does she have a baby named Wil? With whom?
Posted 113 months ago. ( permalink )

UltimateGraphics says:

Whew, that's a tall order! I read the PW 3 years ago, so I'm not as clear, but I do remember a vague hint that Gustave and Leslie had a child, and it may have been fake Gustave. They don't answer it directly. They let you work it out with the timelines and family tree. But ultimately there is no definite confirmation. The death of Gustave at Han Nova is confirmed. I don't remember the deal with the Anima, there was a huge amount of info about it in general, but this is probably another area they don't specifically answer, I would have to comb through the whole book again to find out. Very time consuming. And about Ginny: she loves Gustave, but he sees her as a sister, and basically it says she loves adventure more. She, Robert, Primiera and Gustave ride off into the sunset and continue traveling. Hope that helps!

From what I understand, I was told by someone fluent that Fake Gustave was actually an official from an unnamed (in the game, anyway) country that sought out the Egg for military power.

Here's still hoping you decide to give translating it a go!

Hi there. Just wanted to thank you for the amazing job you did with the Xenogears PW, thank you very much indeed for going through the trouble of scanning, translating AND sharing the whole thing here. I mean, as I randomly stumbled upon this page I went like "...You gotta be kidding me" cause I had basically lost all hope years ago of finding even raw scans of the book.

Now, I'll have to to give props to the above posters who are interested in seeing the SFII book uploaded as well, however I do understand that it's going to be very time consuming for you so you might not be very motivated at the moment if it's just a couple people who want it. Still, you can count me in :P

Cheers, 0T

I remember when I translated that, I had to re read it a few times to make sure. Yes, it looks like the original inhabitants of Solaris have been recycled. Ever notice in the game how everyone looks exactly the same in Solaris? All that blond hair . . .
A not so subtle satire of the 'Aryan' notion that got started in Nazi Germany 60 years ago.

I let my flickr pro account expire, so the images are only 1000 x 600 and some won't show up in the collection until my 200 additional pictures per month allowance gets them to appear in 3 months or so.

I chose not to renew for now, because the interest has waned, the PW translation is out there for download in hi res in various places. It is really old news now at this point after 2 years online. I figure anyone that wanted it, got it by now.

As another consideration, Flickr is really anal retentive about copyright protection and I have gotten a few take down notices. I'm tired of their BS, basically.
Thanks for your interest. If I move them to Picasa, I will provide a link on each Xenogears page that remains on flickr.

This is fantastic, kudos for tackling this herculean task. My only gripe is that you preserved all of the mistakes made by the original translators, e.g. is Tolone (Throne), Kelvena (Cherubina), Gebler (Geburah) Thames (Tammuz) etc. I know some people prefer them simply because they're used to them, they don't want any changes. Ah well.
