Three-Toed Woodpecker( Picoides tridactylus ), male. 28.6.2010, Kalkkimaa, Tornio, Finland.
Silent woodpecker of our old vanishing forests. Nests many times very near Goshawks - reason is unknown. Both prefer old forest but I think too that it is not the only reason.
Found some days ago nest of a three-toed - quite rare here where I live...and goshawk nested only 100 meter from it. They bot have three nestlings. Didn`t unfortunately have wider lens, so I`ll go back to take some pics from surrounding forest. It was so beautiful with all green fresh vegetation in the ground that it should be digitized:)
[For some unknown reason (to me) view on black - below, cannot produce anymore 1200 px pics, so I changed also original to 1024 size.... I would have liked to show my pics even bigger, but as far as I know nothing cannot be done.]
Bigger is anyway better: View On Black
Taken in dark forest, 1600 ISO, f:5.0, 1/320s, Nikon D300 & AF-Nikkor 4/300 mm, handheld)
