A fern is any one of a group of about 12,000 species of plants belonging to the botanical group known as Pteridophyta.

The silver fern in particular has a prominent place within New Zealand culture. Its leaf features as the emblem of many of the country's top national sports teams, including the eponymous Silver Ferns (netball) and the All Blacks (rugby).
