Carroña (Carrion) - Detail

Javier Pérez (Spanish, born 1968)

Made in Italy, Murano, 2011

Blown glass chandelier, assembled, broken; taxidermied crows, wire, monofilament

"You're right. It is crows eating carrion. It says so right here," said a woman who proceeded to read out the sign, in wonder. "Man, that is the best road-kill, ever!"

This provocative sculpture evokes the opportunistic birds eating carrion in a pool of blood by the side of the road, a metaphor for the decline of Murano's centuries-old glass industry. Javier Pérez often submits his materials to high-risk situations, such as shattering this chandelier — disturbing a a museum, which continually strives for the preservation of its artworks.
