fuel stop, Bakersfield

Life in southern San Joaquin Valley has always been tough. The region was settled by poor white migrants Oklahoma and neighboring states fleeing the environmental effects of the Dust Bowl; literally Grapes of Wrath stuff. You still hear it in the spoken word. The field of sociolinguistics calls Kern County the only island of Southern American English noncontiguous with Dixie.
