Paris to Angoulême, Day 3 - Loche to Grosbout, 94.5 miles

A 3 day ride to raise money for the mental health awareness charity Mind, on 100 year old bicycles, roughly following the old Bordeaux-Paris cycle race route.

Our arrival in Angoulême on Friday coincided with the Circuit Des Remparts held there that weekend.

We set off from the Montlhery Circuit near Paris on Tuesday afternoon, but a mechanical problem early on with my front wheel bearings set us back a couple of hours, and we only made it to Orleans at midnight. Once the sun had set it was bitterly cold, and we only had wool shorts and jerseys to ride in. Our mileage today was only 70 miles. Luckily Sorrel in our support vehicle had a motel room in Orleans.

Next day we headed out along the Loire river towards Tours. We made it to Amboise and then left the river and turned south. We made our second stop that evening at a lovely campsite just past of Loche, 104 miles.

Thursday we planned another big day, and hoped to break the back of the ride. The scenery was changing now, as were the roads, lots of gently undulating roads. We skirted around Poitiers, and made it to this evenings campsite just before dusk, after covering 95 miles today. That left just 38 miles to Angloumême, which we covered the next morning. It was getting increasingly warmer the further south we headed, 34 that afternoon!

We smashed out initial target of £300 and raised well over £1200 in the end, thank you so much to all our supporters along the way.

I did the ride on the 1925 Bruneau Durieux, single rear brake, with a single gear coaster hub. Ben rode the whole distance on the single fixed gear Tapon, pre WW1 racer.

The Tapon actually comes from Angoulême, sold by the Tapon Brothers there in about 1905. The ride was essentially a homecoming for Ben's bike.
