Synthetic Fluorescent Mineral "Zinc Sulfide w/ 1% Mn - Sphalerite 3.0" - Test tube over Alcohol Flame

 

Sulfur, manganese chloride and a zinc chloride solution were combined and heated in a test tube over an alcohol burner until all the liquid was gone. It was then heated for about 30 min. longer over the alcohol flame. During this time the test tube contained a clear and incandescent liquid.

 

After cooling the solidified mass at the bottom of the test tube was a light green color.

 

In addition to manganese, another activator is assumed to be trace amounts of copper.
