Kicker Touchscreen Conference Phone (front)

The Kicker Touchscreen Conference Phone (completed April 2009) is a digital VoIP touchscreen phone concept designed with small businesses in mind. The phone combines the humanity and social awareness of in-person meetings with the convenience of efficient technology by making conference calling more transparent and fluid, so you can actually see what's happening on a call and respond accordingly.

* Synchronizes with calendars and contacts for one-tap dialing

* Quickly see who's on the call and who's talking

* "Hand Raising" to indicate a desire to speak

* "Poking" to nudge other callers

* Recording and marking of calls

* Multi-line dialing

* Adjusting individual lines for the best overall conference call quality

* Detachable microphones for clear communication across the room

* Comes in four different colors (silver, red, orange, and green)

* Compact, pared down form reduces the use of raw materials in production, packing and shipping.

Why do conference phones suck? We started with this simple question, and from there, set out to make a better one. When our small business began looking into conference phones, nearly everyone we talked to told us about their frustrations with using their phones—often specially-designed, very expensive conference phones. Our design team knew this as well, since we all have used and disliked many conference phones ourselves. In an era where travel is often restricted due to economic cut-backs and environmental impacts, having a user-friendly and functional remote communication system (read conference phone) is paramount to business success and client satisfaction.

Our studio decided to focus on the three primary characteristics: transparency, openness, and unobtrusiveness. These were all the things we thought existing phones weren't and needed to be. Transparent so you can see what is happening on a call. Open so that the phone works with other office management systems like calendars and existing contact lists. Unobtrusive so the phone doesn't get in the way of the communication but rather enhances it through functionality and straightforward design.

The conference phone prototype is a high-resolution SLA model. The product housing is injection molded ABS plastic, which can easily be substituted with an eco-friendly plant-derived resin.

About Kicker Studio:

Kicker Studio is a San Francisco-based product design consultancy. (FIX). Kicker started with a simple premise: there's a better way to create products. We would design products from the inside-out, with the functionality and interactivity determining the form and interface. So we gathered a team of world-class tinkerers, visual designers, prototypers, artists, researchers, developers, writers, project managers, product strategists, interaction and industrial designers to do just that.

We've found that our approach works great for companies with emerging technology, or companies who want to use new technologies to innovate on existing products. We've designed products for organizations ranging from Fortune 500 companies to start-ups and everything in between.
