Happy Earth Day, Big Blue Marble!

Hope you had a lovely Earth Day, that you felt connected to the beauty of this amazing planet and its family of inhabitants, both animal and human, and found a way to nurture and renew your spirit!

John McConnell first introduced the idea of a global holiday called "Earth Day" at the 1969 UNESCO Conference on the Environment.

UN Secretary-General U Thant supported McConnell's global initiative to celebrate this annual event, and in 1971 he signed a proclamation to that effect, saying:

"May there be only peaceful and cheerful Earth Days to come for our beautiful Spaceship Earth as it continues to spin and circle in frigid space with its warm and fragile cargo of animate life."

Spaceship Earth is a world view term usually expressing concern over the use of limited resources available on Earth and the behavior of everyone on it to act as a harmonious crew working toward the greater good.

My personal Earth Day pledge: I promise, to the best of my ability, to cherish and protect our one and only Earth—and encourage others, by my example, to do the same.
