Beginning and End
I shot this little photo on the morning of St. Patrick’s Day in 2017. Right after this sunrise I started the 16 hour drive home from there in the Eastern Sierra to Seattle. It was a fairly normal drive until the end.
It was then around 10:30pm, dark, raining like crazy, and I was almost back to Seattle on I5 doing about 70mph in the fast lane heading north. All of a sudden I see something big flung into my lane. The vehicle in front of me struck whatever it was, causing that vehicle to spin wildly across five lanes of traffic where it hit the ditch and rolled violently several times before coming to a stop on it’s roof. I was sure whoever was in that SUV were dead, as it was an insanely violent crash. Fortunately, the two occupants of that vehicle were in critical condition for weeks, but survived.
Now, the thing flung into my lane causing the incident? As I swerved to avoid it myself, I saw it was a woman, still tumbling violently after being struck by the SUV. I was just inches from hitting her. I don’t know how I avoided it.
From what I learned later, her drunk boyfriend collided with a stalled vehicle in the south bound lanes which flung her from the vehicle and over the median into my lane due to her lack of seatbelt. A young couple out celebrating St. Patrick’s Day. I still see her tangled body as I swerve to avoid it in my dreams... VERY often. For the love of all things holy, call an Uber if you’re drinking and wear your seatbelt. I know getting preachy about drinking and driving is annoying, but damn, be safe out there y’all.
