Object Lesson for Oblivious Travelers

Mangled girders serve as a monument to the Skeidararsandur bridge that was swept away in a flood triggered by a volcanic eruption beneath the , Vatnajökull glacier. Apparently such glacier-melted-by-volcano floods are common enough to warrant a name in the Icelandic language: jökulhlaup. The glacier in the background is Svinafellsjökull.
