HEARTLAND OF THE CIVIL WAR JOURNEY, July 11 – 15, 2011
This program takes teachers on a week-long tour of historic Civil War sites throughout the Chesapeake region. Participants travel to Sandy Spring Museum of rural life, Antietam Battlefield, Frederick Douglass’ birth place, the Lincoln Cottage, Harpers Ferry, WV, and other points of interest. The program also takes a hard and poignant look at the role that slavery played in leading our young nation into bloodshed, and examines the ramifications of slavery’s end for African Americans in the years following the war’s conclusion.
