Lost in Translation by Kylee Smit (mixed media)

Through the form of a scroll mounted on the wall, this artist's book tackles the topics of language and translation. The Nideggen paper of the scroll pulls out from the bottom of a pine box. On the scroll the phrase "The meaning is not hidden" is translated 43 times from one language to another using an online translation website. This text is handwritten in India ink, and the first and last lines are penned in English to show the mutation of the phrase after it has been translated many times. The purpose of this idea is to show how easily a message may become lost in translation.
