Bottle Oven & Cortina, Longton, April 1987

During the 1980s I helped form The Potteries Heritage Society, and was elected Chairman. The group aimed at saving Stoke-on-Trent's historic buildings from being wiped out. We were more than just a history group, being activists and campaigners too. Amongst the successes during my time as Chairman was the listing of all remaining bottle ovens within the city. The listing came too late for this bottle oven, which was unceremoniously demolished just weeks before the listings were officially declared! A coincidence? Well, I'll leave you to make your mind up on that one.

The bottle oven belonged to Caroline Pottery, situated in Caroline Street, Longton. The photo was taken on a Sunday in April 1987, when I was more than pleased to find I could include a conveniently parked Cortina in the photograph. Its a Mk IV, and would appear to be a GL on an R reg plate.
