Steve Riley & the Mamou Playboys, Fred's Lounge-KVPI Wall of Fame induction/performance, Nov. 3, 2018
Steve Riley and the Mamou Playboys were added to the Wall of Fame at world famous Fred’s Lounge in Mamou during an induction ceremony Saturday morning, Nov. 3, 2018. They then performed for an hour in front of a really packed crowd.

The ceremony was led by Mark Layne, general manager of KVPI radio in Ville Platte, and Annona Balfa, who hosts a live broadcast of Cajun bands from Freds’ Lounge 9:05-11 a.m. every Saturday on KVPI-AM. In addition, Mamou Mayor Ricky Fontenot presented Steve Riley with a congratulatory plaque.

At one point when the band was performing after the ceremony, Steve invited Barry Pierrottie to play with the band. Barry has played triangle with bands at Fred’s for many years. As can been seen in the photos of him hugging Steve and holding his triangle high above his head, he was thrilled to be part of the event.

I decided to shoot the event with my Nikon D850 instead of my usual D5. I didn't want to carry two lenses, so I shot everything with a 24-70 mm Nikkor lens. I used the live view mode and tilt screen to try to shoot above and around people in the crowded lounge. (Getting unobstructed shots of the presentation was something of a challenge.) The live view focus seemed slow, and I didn’t get all of the shots I wanted, but overall I think the D850 worked out well. Most the shots were taken with bounce-from-behind-flash with the unit shielded to try to keep the flash out of people’s eyes. I attempted to make post-processing adjustments to a strong color cast from the flash bouncing off the wood ceiling. I took a few available light shots at ISO 12,800.
