Church Point Courir de Mardi Gras, Feb. 11, 2018
It was Mardi Gras de Boue when the Church Point Mardi Gras chased chickens across a rain-soaked lawn on a foggy, misty morning Feb. 11, 2018. As they ran across grass dead after a winter freeze, they churned up mud that splattered everywhere except, fortunately, the front of my camera lens. After chasing numerous chickens, some of the Mardi Gras engaged in ditch diving, leaping into drainage ditches along the road.

The photos in this set were taken with a Nikon D850 mounted with a Nikon 28-300 mm 3.5-5.6 lens, which is not as sharp my other lenses but has the advantage of being able to zoom in and out as the chicken chasers dash around the yard. I had the shutter set on speeds up to 1/2,000th second with the ISO frequently 3200 or higher. In addition to the motion of the chicken chasers, the sharpness of the images was, I’m sure, affected by the motion of the camera as I tried to aim and also avoid getting run over.
