Cajun Accordion Kings at the Liberty Theater, March 11, 2017
Steve Riley organized and hosted “Cajun Accordion Kings,” a special show featuring Wayne Toups, Jo-EL Sonnier, Walter Mouton, and Andrew Cormier performing before a packed, standing-room-only crowd at the Liberty Theater in Eunice March 11, 2017.

Each accordionist was asked to play a favorite song solo, followed by songs accompanied by the stage band, High Performance (Jamey Bearb on fiddle, Richard Comeaux on steel guitar, Brazos Huval on bass, and Kevin Dugas on drums).

Steve Riley and High Performance opened the show with a couple of songs, and then he served as host, asking each musician about their careers that have made them accordion legends in Cajun music. Riley, Sonnier, and Mouton closed the show together on stage playing “J’étais au bal.”

Sponsors included KBON radio 101.1 Louisiana Proud, Washington State Bank (new branch on Second Street in Eunice), Rocky’s Cajun Kitchen on Highway 190, east side of Eunice, Charles Aguillard Insurance Agency, L’Acadie Inn and RV Park owned by Lance and Kelly Pitre, Cajun French Music Association Chapitre de Lafayette, CFMA Acadiana Charter Chapter, Lakeview Park and Beach 3 miles north of Eunice, T-Boy’s Slaughterhouse Boudin and Crackins in Mamou and Eunice.

In conjunction with the show, Steve Riley and Joel Savoy produced a Valcour Records CD, “Cajun Accordion Kings and the Queen,” with recordings by Walter Mouton, Marc Savoy, Jesse Lege, Carl Hollier, Jo-EL Sonnier, Steve Riley, Robert Jardell, Bruce Daigrepont, Jimmy Breaux, Wayne Toups, Errol Verret, Ray Abshire, Paul Daigle, Sheryl Cormier, and Dirk Powell. It was on sale at the show and is scheduled for release April 7:

Riley will host another special show, “Cajun and Creole Fiddle Masters,” on May 20 at the Liberty. He is working an additional special show, “Creole Accordion Kings,” for the summer.
