Church Point Mardi Gras Courir, Feb. 26, 2017
These photos of the Church Point Courir de Mardi Gras were taken Sunday, Feb. 26, 2017.

Back in 2012, the last time I photographed the Church Point Courir, the run conveniently for me began with chicken chasing, which I photographed, before the run proceeded to stops in the countryside. When I returned in 2013, I discovered that the run apparently was assembling on a different street and that initial chicken-chasing was no longer included. I wasn’t sure where to try to connect with the run in the countryside, so I gave up and returned to Eunice. For several years, I decided against attempting to photograph the Church Point run without having a plan. Finally, in 2017, I studied a map several days before the run and figured out a backroad route that would allow me in and out access to Highway 754, the road on which the courir heads away from Church Point.

As things turned out, I chose a side road that connects with the highway near a main stop where the Mardi Gras spent more than an hour chasing dozens of chickens—by far the most chickens I’ve ever seen thrown at any stop on any run anywhere. A large crowd of spectators gathered to watch the spectacle.
