Steve LaFleur and Mamou at the Blue Moon, Sept. 23, 2011
After a very long absence, Steve LaFleur and Mamou--a band that I know only through listening to a few songs on the radio from recordings released a couple of decades ago--has returned to the stage with a unique brand of Cajun rock. My Sept. 23 encounter with the 2011 iteration of Mamou was all too brief: they didn’t go on stage at the Blue Moon Saloon in Lafayette until 11 p.m., and I needed to leave to return to Eunice after hearing only a few songs. But I hope to catch some more of their music when they appear on the main stage at Festivals Acadiens et Créoles in Lafayette 1-2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 16, 2011 (the performance should be carried on—the time is approximate).

All but one of the songs I heard at the Blue Moon were in English (the French song, I believe, was “Homme à Pitier” from Mamou’s 1992 Rounder CD, “Ugly Day”). Other members of Mamou are Henry Hample, fiddle; Dan McCann, bass; Chris Boudreaux, drums.
