Steve Riley and the Mamou Playboys, Downtown Eunice Mardi Gras Street Dance, Feb. 25, 2020
After taking photos of a parade in Mamou, I arrived about 4:15 to photograph Steve Riley and the Mamou Playboys, whose performance on the Fred Charlie Music Stage for the Downtown Eunice Mardi Gras Street Dance was already under way. Guest musicians included Steve Riley’s 10-year-old son, Burke, who the preceding Saturday won the Youth Division of the Squeeze Box Shootout in Jennings, and Demetric Thomas, rubboard player with Geno Delafose and French Rockin’ Boogie. There were also, of course, Mardi Gras who invaded the stage a couple of times. For the finale, the band played Boozoo Chavis’s "Zydeco Mardi Gras" (with the refrain "Tout l'autour de Mardi Gras") segueing in to "La chanson de Mardi Gras" while the Mardi Gras took over the stage dancing and carousing. I made my way through the crowd to get closer, and, holding the camera over my head and using the live view mode to compose and focus, got a few shots of the excitement and mayhem.
