Ryan Perkins leads the Zydeco Capital Jam, Feb. 8, 2020
Ryan Perkins, a young very talented accordionist who at present is not part of any band, led the Zydeco Capital Jam Feb. 8, 2020, at the St. Landry Visitor Center located off I-49 at exit 23 a few miles north of Opelousas.

I was impressed by his excellent skills playing the accordion for several songs at last month’s jam that was led by Geno Delafose. This month, as leader of the jam, he played a wide variety of Creole and zydeco songs in his own style on single-row accordions and then switched to a triple-row accordion to play some blues. He also provided vocals for a number of songs.

Perkins is a 23-year-old big rig truck driver who lives in Plaisance. He first began playing ten years ago, learning by listening to the music.

The Visitor Center served king cake to celebrate the one-year anniversary of the jam, held 1-3 p.m. on the second Tuesday of each month. The event is organized by Herman Fuselier, director of the St. Landry Parish Tourist Commission. For more information, go to www.facebook.com/VisitStLandryParish/ or cajuntravel.com/.
