Louisiana governor at Nathan Willliams Tribute during 37th annual Original Southwest Louisiana Zydeco Music Festival, Opelousas, Aug. 31, 2019
Nathan Williams, a Creole musician who has played a key role in the preservation and promotion of zydeco and Creole culture in Louisiana and around the world, was honored at the 37th annual Original Southwest Louisiana Zydeco Music Festival in Opelousas Aug. 31, 2019, in a tribute program that included a presentation by Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards. In addition, Williams received a plaque from festival director Lena Charles and other recognition from State Representative Dustin Miller, State Senator Gerald Boudreaux, and Opelousas Mayor Julius Alsandor. When the Zydeco Cha Chas began their first song, Governor Edwards and Representative Miller joined in on rubboard.

(Update: Governor John Bel Edwards, a Democrat, went on later in the fall to win re-election on Nov. 16 despite three visits to the state by President Trump supporting his Republican opponent and attacking Edwards.)

The tribute started at about 2:15. I stayed for part of the Zydeco Cha Chas performance and then headed to another festival in Rayne.
Before the event, I knew that there would be a tribute, but I didn’t know that Governor Edwards would be present. I hadn’t really made any specific plans for how to photograph the stage presentations and wound up scrambling to get my flash mounted. I attempted to use bounce flash, which turned out to be inadequate to overcome contrasting hues and levels of brightness from the overhead stage lighting. I attempted to remedy some of lighting issues through post processing. As usual, I used available light for photos of the musical performance.
