Randall Jackson leads Zydeco Capital Jam Aug. 10, 2019
Randall Jackson on accordion led the monthly Zydeco Capital Jam session at the St. Landry Parish Visitor Center 1-3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 10, 2019. I had previously photographed Jackson when he was playing bass with Chubby Carrier. At that band’s performance during the 2018 Festivals Acadiens et Créoles, he switched to accordion for a couple of songs. By that time I was away from the stage taking photos of dancers before it got too dark, but I was impressed by both his accordion playing and his vocals. At the zydeco jam, he gave everyone a good sample of his talent and versatility. He played a piano accordion and a single row and also switched to a triple-row that belonged to Jonathan Goodly-Druilhet from Lake Charles (they traded accordions). He sang both Creole and zydeco standards, and, when Zydeco Joe Citizen arrived around 2 p.m., they chatted for a while in Creole French. He is the leader of the band R.J. and Zydeco Smoove, performing what he describes as Neo-Creole Musique : www.facebook.com/ZydecoSmoove/.

The jam was organized by Herman Fuselier, executive director of the St. Landry Parish Tourist Commission. For more about the event, check out the article in OffBeat www.offbeat.com/news/randall-jackson/.

The Visitor Center is located a few miles north of Opelousas at exit 23 on I-49. For information about future jams on the second Saturday of the month, go to www.facebook.com/VisitStLandryParish/.
