Nolton Semien, 1939-2019
Nolton Semien, a widely admired Creole musician whom I had a chance to photograph only a few times, passed away May 22, 2019, at the age of 79. This Flickr album includes photos previously uploaded from a 2006 performance at Festivals Acadiens and other photos taken of Trio Kreyol playing at Le Musique Creole Workshop during the Roots Heritage Festival of the 2006 Louisiana Folk Roots Dewey Balfa Cajun and Creole Heritage Week at Chicot State Park and of Nolton Semien at the Liberty Theater in 2006.

According to a newspaper obituary quoting from liner notes to his 2012 album “Oh Lucille,” after learning to play the accordion from his father, “From the 50s to the 80s Nolton performed at zydeco trail rides and nearly every church hall and dance club in Louisiana.” If you do a YouTube search, you can find will a number of recordings and a video of him playing at the 2014 Balfa Camp at Vermilionville in a set that included the song “Oh Lucille”: www.youtube.com/watch?v=SSI7pbvevoQ. A Google search also turned up a newspaper article describing his band the Zydeco Vamps in 1991 as playing “Zydeco, Rhythm and Blues, French, Soul, and a little bit of disco”: www.newspapers.com/clip/13455112/nolton_semien_zydeco_vam....
