Wayne Toups, Steve Riley, and Jamie Bergeron at the Breaux Bridge Crawfish Festival, May 5, 2018
For the first time since 2011, I decided to check out the Breaux Bridge Crawfish Festival late Saturday afternoon May 5, 2018. As in years past, by that time in the day, the festival grounds were really packed. I decided to move back and forth between the two music stages and combine in one photo album a few shots of Wayne Toups and ZydeCajun, Steve Riley and the Mamou Playboys, and Jamie Bergeron and the Kickin’ Cajuns.

Arriving toward the end of their sets on the two stages, I took a few photos of the Mamou Playboys, then of Wayne Toups, and then returned back in time to catch the Mamou Playboys performing their last song (I believe it was “Oh, Mom”), which had a surprising finish. In the tradition of Iry LeJeune, Sam Broussard kept on playing his guitar after he tripped on a monitor and fell on his back. According to Milton Vanicor, Iry LeJeune wound up playing “Lacassine Special” on his back after falling off a stack of wooden Coca Cola flats on which his chair had been positioned on the bandstand (see Ron Yule’s book “Iry LeJeune: Wailin’ the Blues Cajun Style,” p. 35). Once the song was over, Sam got up, still smiling and uninjured.

When I arrived back at the other stage to catch Wayne Toups’ closing number, the crowd was really packed, and everyone had their phones raised in the air taking photos of Wayne performing beside his son, Emery Marlon Toups, who’s now approaching 2-1/2 years old and, like his father, seemed perfectly at ease in front of a huge crowd. At that point, all I could do was raise the camera over my head to get wide shots of Wayne and his son with the crowd.
