Courtney Granger sings country at Le Grand Hoorah!, April 21, 2018
Courtney Granger, grandnephew of Dewey Balfa and member of the Pine Leaf Boys and Balfa Toujours, performed classic country at Le Grand Hoorah! in Chicot State Park north of Ville Platte on April 21, 2018. Years ago, I and the rest of the crowd at one of the Liberty Theater’s classic country shows were really blown away by Courtney’s perfect delivery of a George Jones song (I believe it was “She Still Thinks I Care”) with the same natural ease he brings to his Cajun vocals. Courtney Granger’s 2016 performance during AmericanaFest in Nashville earned him the title “Best George Jones Disciple” from Rolling Stone magazine:

In 2016, Valcour Records released “Beneath Still Waters,” a CD on which Courtney performs 13 classic country songs. Amelia Powell and her sister, Sophie, daughters of Christine Balfa and Dirk Powell, who sang background vocals on the CD, joined Courtney on stage at Le Grand Hoorah! for one song. This year Louisiana Folk Roots partnered with the Prairie Heritage Foundation, organizer of Le Grand Hoorah!, to make Le Grand Hoorah! the opening event of LFR’s Dewey Balfa Cajun and Creole Heritage Week. For more information, go to
