Three Cajuns and Leroy at the Liberty Theater, Nov. 25, 2017
When I saw the November schedule for the Liberty Theater, I noticed that the last show of the month on Nov. 25, 2017, listed a band I had never heard of before, Three Cajuns and Leroy. Other than zydeco musician Leroy Thomas, I couldn’t think of any current musician I’ve photographed or read about named Leroy. I could recall only Leroy “Happy Fats” LeBlanc, who died in 1988. I remained puzzled as three musicians entered the Liberty Theater stage at the start of the show: Tally Miller on accordion and vocals, Rick Sprague on a five-string fiddle; and Joe Morvant on acoustic guitar. Where was Leroy?

As it turns out, Leroy is Tally Miller’s name for computer-generated percussion. He also incorporates harmony vocals provided by a computer-generated vocalist named Gertrude. Although the technology was new to me, the performance was faithful to the Cajun tradition, played in a kind of intimate back-porch style with songs by many musicians: Paul Daigle and Robert Elkins, Jo-EL Sonnier, Nathan Abshire, Belton Richard, and many others.
