Waylon Thibodeaux at the Mercredi Show in Carencro, Sept. 16, 2015
The Waylon Thibodeaux Band performed 6-8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 16, 2015, to kick off the fall Mercredi Show weekly series at Pelican Park in Carencro a little north of Lafayette.

This was my first visit to the Mercredi Show, presented by the Parks and Recreation Commission and the City of Carencro on a permanent stage located in front of a hill within a large athletic park complex. People can sit in lawn chairs or stretch out on quilts with a good view of the stage from slope, which also has shade trees at the top. For more information about the shows, go to www.pelicanpark.net/concerts.html or www.facebook.com/MercrediShow.

Waylon Thibodeaux, who lives in Houma and who spent many years performing at Bourbon Street venues in New Orleans as well as touring nationally and internationally, hasn’t made it over to Acadiana very often, so I’ve only photographed him briefly a couple of times when he was at Festivals Acadiens. (He’ll be at the festival this year with other musicians 5:30-6:45 p,m, Oct. 9 for a set titled “Acadian Connection.”) He describes his music as “a mixture –it’s Cajun, but not too traditional, it’s Zydeco with a pinch of New Orleans’ sound, a small pinch of South Louisiana ‘Swamp Pop,’ a taste of Country and a little Rock n’ Roll that’s sure to get you on your feet and dancing.” He sings in both French and English.
