30th annual World Championship Crawfish Étouffée Cookoff, March 29, 2015
These photos of the 30th annual World Championship Crawfish Étouffée Cookoff, were taken at the Northwest Community Center Pavilion in Eunice Sunday, March 29, 2015.

I arrived about 11:15 a.m. near the end of the set of the first musical performers, La Bande de Plaquemine Brulée, a group from Church Point. I then walked around the perimeter of the pavilion to take a few shots of the booths that started selling étouffée at 11 a.m. A large crowd turned out to enjoy the food, the music, and the beautiful weather. Various organizations and businesses entered the competition to be named championship étouffée cooks, but the biggest winners of all were the visitors who got to sample a variety of delicious recipes for one of the most savory dishes on earth.

At noon, I took photos of the second band, Horace Trahan and the Ossun Express. While the étouffée looked very, very tempting, I decided this year to avoid the problem of matching insulin for my Type 1 diabetes with the white rice served with étouffée and went home to eat lunch. I returned in time to get some shots of the final band, Steve Riley and High Performance.

The bands performed on a stage under the pavilion in deep shade with strong backlighting from the sun. I tried photographing La Bande de Plaquemine Brulée using flash at full power bounced off of the high pavilion ceiling, an approach which didn’t compensate enough for the backlighting, so I used direct TTL flash for the shots of the other bands.
