2020 Sign of the Times, Liberty Theater 'show cancelled tonight' sign posted on one entrance door, Mar 19-5567
“Show cancelled tonight.” This is the sign posted on one of the entrance doors to the Liberty Theater in downtown Eunice, home of the weekly Rendez-vous des Cajuns Show on Saturday evenings. For anyone outside of Southwest Louisiana who doesn’t already know, entertainment venues have been shut down as a part of the effort to combat the spread of the coronavirus. Under a statewide order issued by Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards, “gatherings of more than 50 people are no longer permitted, bars and casinos must close and restaurants will only be able to offer take out or delivery.” If the situation changes, the order could be lifted April 13, 2020. A number of festivals have been postponed until the fall, and some have been cancelled.
While a necessary step to try to control the outbreak, the closures are hurting many businesses and their employees. In Lafayette, a “Lost My Gig Fund” has been established for full-time local musicians who lost work because of the shutdown: www.facebook.com/donate/543435819631268/543440686297448/. As of March 19, the fundraiser will be open for 13 more days.
