Malvern Gas Lamp

This photo shows one of Malvern's famous gas lamps. The 150 year old Victorian lamps were saved from conversion to electricity by public demand.

The writer CS Lewis was at a boarding school in Malvern and was inspired by gas lamps burning in quiet places surrounded by trees. In his children’s classic “The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe” when Lucy ventures into the wicked White Witch’s snowy woodland she finds a lighted lamp just like the ones that can still be seen in Malvern.

Belle Vue Terrace can be seen on the left and Barclays Bank, the Old Royal Library in my previous photo can be seen in the background.
