Red headed Poison frog (Ranitomeya fantastica) - Cordillera Escalera Conservation Area, Peru
I spotted this female Ranitomeya fantastica watching me from a crook in a small tree and was able to approach her without startling her. There was a slightly smaller male nearby as well who I was unable to include in the same shot with her. However I was able to play around with lighting a bit to get what I think is an interesting photo. This species is endemic to a small portion of Peru where several different morphs can be found. Most of those morphs are predominantly arboreal but the frogs in this population spend a lot of time on the ground, however as you can see here they do venture upwards once in a while.
