Happy World Snake Day
Red-tailed boa (Boa constrictor) - Cordillera Escalera Conservation Area, Peru
Today, July 16th, is world snake day so of course I'm going to post a photo of a snake. I decided to go with one of my most recent photos that I took last night, a large boa constrictor along the banks of the river that runs through the portion of the reserve where I currently do my fieldwork. A large and impressive species, this is one of the most recognizable snakes in the world. Boa constrictors make frequent appearances in movies, media, and are a common pet as well. They are found over a wide swathe of territory in Central and South America, with a variety of different subspecies in different parts of their range, I have to admit I am unsure which one this is. We had a lengthy photoshoot at dusk as the light was changing quickly so expect more photos of this snake.
