Mite (family Anystidae) - Danum Valley, Malaysia
Recently photographing some mites in the backyard here in Wisconsin reminded me of the only other mite I have photographed as the main subject before, this one right here. So I went into my files searching for the images from that night and I was able to find them among the many unedited photos I still have from Borneo. Interestingly, I think the mites I photographed outside in the suburbs here in temperate Wisconsin are in the same family as this mite that I photographed deep in the steamy jungle of Malaysian Borneo. This mite was considerably bigger so even though I didn't have the macro tools which I used on the latest mites available to me I was still able to photograph it as it engaged in some interesting behavior. Anystidae are a family of mites that are generalist predators, and that is what it seems like this mite is doing; munching on some sort of insect eggs. While still small in comparison to most of my subjects this mite was pretty massive in comparison to other mites I have encountered.
And a link to the much smaller but I think also Anystidae mites from a recent photoshoot in Wisconsin. www.flickr.com/photos/26500525@N08/18346190784/in/datepos...
