Long-tailed Macaque (Macaca fascicularis) - Danum Valley, Malaysia
I had a chance to observe this macaque and his tribe as they lounged in a tree one afternoon in Danum Valley. This species of Macaque is quite widespread and common in a variety of habitats, in some areas it has lost its fear of humans and is actually a pest. Luckily this is not the case in Danum valley, the macaques here have a healthy fear of humans and keep their distance, which is not to say that they're not curious and will often observe people from a lofty perch such as this tree. This species was often seen raiding fruiting trees, infact a group would hang around and often seem to strip the tree of all of its fruit within a few days. These monkeys are sloppy eaters and often their presence is betrayed by falling chunks of fruit, this in turn provides food for ground dwelling animals such as bearded pigs and certain civet species.
