Endemic Crab

Geosesarma aurantium - Mt. Silam, Malaysia

This is Geosesarma aurantium, a tiny crab which was described in 1995, it is found only on Mount Silam in Sabah. This land crab is found in the ultramafic forests of Mt. Silam all the way up to 884 m, this individual was seen at about 620 m. I wasn't aware of the existence of this little crab until I stopped at the mountain and came across a small sign describing the crab, I immediately began searching for it and before too long I spotted this one moving across the forest floor. While many mountains in Borneo boast high levels of endemism, I was surprised that Mt. Silam had endemic species, the peak of the mountain is less than 900m.
