Networking at 2010 Michigan Municipal League Convention
The 2010 Michigan Municipal League Convention focused on the eight assets that make for vibrant communities – physical design and walkability, green initiatives, cultural economic development, entrepreneurship, multiculturalism, messaging and technology, transit and education. The League had speakers throughout the nation talk about various aspects of these assets and why they are so important to Michigan’s Future. Speaking Wednesday Sept. 22 at Convention were James Howard Kunstler (physical design and walkability); Jacky and Dora King of King’s Karate and Harvesting Earth Farm (green initiatives), Jack Hess, President of the Columbus Area Chamber of Commerce (cultural economic development), Brian Balasia, president and founder of Digerati in Detroit (entrepreneurship); Jeff Jenks, MML board president; Dan Gilmartin, MML CEO, Peter Allen of Peter Allen & Associates; Mark Nickita, city commissioner of Birmingham; Erin Caudell of the Ruth Mott Foundation, Roger Fraser, city administrator for Ann Arbor; Dave Ivan, of MSU Extension, Yvonne Fizer of the Sirolli Iinstitute, Ernesto Sirolli of the Sirolli Institute, Eric Tobin of the Generation E Institute and Athens councilmember, Edward Klobucher, Hazel Park city manager, Chris Hackbarth of the Michigan Municipal League, Samantha Jones Harkins of the MML, Summer Minnick of the MML, Andy Schor of the MML, Arnold Weinfeld of the MML, Sue Jeffers of the MML, William Mathewson of the MML, Randall L. Brown, Portage City attorney, Michael McGree, of the Miller Canfield Paddock and Stone law firm, Stephen Postema, Ann Arbor city attorney, Ray Anderson, Norway City Manager, Allan Hooper, of CMS Energy Corp., John B. O’Reilly Jr., Dearborn mayor; and James Murray, director of public works for Dearborn. Also seven Michigan communities are in the running for the League's 2010 Community Excellence Award. Representatives from each community presented projects that are making a difference in their communities. The seven CEA finalists are East Lansing, Ispheming, Harbor Beach, Kingsley, Saginaw, Monroe, and Grand Haven. And on Day 2 of the Convention League CEO Dan Gilmartin hosted his monthly radio show on News/Talk 760 WJR. His guests included Linden Mayor David Lossing, Hamtramck Mayor Karen Majewski, Brian Balasia and his co-host was John Bebow of the Center for Michigan.
