Eurostars that never were
Drawing up to the buffer stops at Lille Flandres at the end of its high-speed dash from Paris Nord is one the 33xxx series of Eurostar units that were intended to operate the North-of-London daytime services. They never did. The planned service and its overnight Nightstar equivalent were scuppered by the advent of the low-cost airlines. For a couple of years, UK East Coast franchisee GNER hired some of the redundant 14-coach sets for use on services to York and Leeds (and very comfortable they were), while SNCF likewise found use for them on the Lille-Paris runs. The GNER units eventually joined their SNCF sisters.
