Orange County Fire Authority Bell 412EP Helicopter

    Newer Older

My Fire Department maintains its aerial firefighting/rescue fleet of helicopters at Fire Station 41 at the Fullerton, California Airport. Sadly, I missed my opportunity to fly before retiring. I'll never forget climbing out of a similar helicopter during a brush fire: I had to set-up a radio repeater for fire communications, and the steep terrain afforded only enough space for the pilot to put one 'skid' on the ground, while I did my task. He was an excellent pilot, and as we flew down the winding canyon going back to base camp, it was more like a race car swerving around sharp curves. That was a way back; nowadays he would lose his career.

Greg you've had a very interesting life, any chance your going to right a book?
from climbing mountains when you were in school to stepping out of Helicopters on a steep slope to light a fire, these are not OUR everyday occurrences.

Great shot, and quite an exciting occupation, for sure.
I climbed out of enough helicopters in Viet Nam to last me for the rest of my life..........
