Jellyfish Overunder

Prev Next

My first ever (somewhat presentable) overunder photo, portrait format taken with a rental camera with underwater housing., I tried some landscape format versions but they all failed. Jellyfish Lake, Republic of Palau, Micronesia.

The jellyfish evolved in the lake without any predators, and over time grew vegetarian and lost their ability to sting. Their red color is a result of an algae diet. The water in the lake is salty and connected underground to the ocean but not even the tiniest jellyfish can get in or out.

Robert Saucier, dbushue, and 78 other people added this photo to their favorites.

So beautiful and wonderfully composed, Tan. I really like the perspective of both below and above water. The vertical comp looks fabulous. I find it so interesting that these guys can't get in and out of this lake. How can you deny evolution?

It's a super cool shot; I love it.
Was your camera actually partially underwater? If so, why don't we see a sharp line from the surface? Sorry, always have lots of questions.....
