The never-ending rebuilding of Rotterdam [Explore - May 14, 2014]

In memory of 14 May 1940.

It was the day of the aerial bombardment of Rotterdam by the Luftwaffe (German air force) during the German invasion of the Netherlands in World War II. The objective was to support the German troops fighting in the city, break Dutch resistance and force the Dutch to surrender. The bombardment and fires caused by it destroyed almost the entire historic city centre, killing nearly eight hundred civilians and leaving 80,000 people homeless.
